An Introduction to Hakomi Therapy
for Therapists and Body-Workers
with Jaci Hull, M.A.
October 18 20, 2002 in Calgary
"Hakomi is an excellent system
for learning key emotional intelligence skills."
Daniel Goleman,
author of "Emotional Intelligence"
The Hakomi Method offers a highly effective, full-human-being approach to the practice of psychotherapy. Using mindfulness and a thorough understanding of the mind-body interface, Hakomi Therapists are able to create an environment of safety and openness in which the client can gently explore and transform their own inner landscapes. Because Hakomi is a body-centered therapy, change is experienced rather than conceptualized. Using the body, the Hakomi therapist can gauge the safety needs of their clients, the core beliefs which stand as obstacles to the clients well-being, and the trauma yet to be resolved. All this combined makes the process of self-discovery peaceful and deep, safe and grounded.
In this weekend you will explore the uses of mindfulness in therapy, understand how stuckness and change can be witnessed through the body, address the rich potentials of the therapeutic relationship and deepen and enliven your own practices. You will learn practical applications of the principles of Hakomi in the resolution of childhood wounds and limiting belief systems. Using class discussion, experiential exercises, one-on-one practice, and movement, we will explore the uniqueness and effectiveness of this remarkable approach to psychotherapy. You will be introduced to the skills of tracking, contact, body-reading, accessing, probes and taking over and you will explore how you can get transformative and lasting results with your clients by using techniques which promote compassion, understanding, and awareness.
We will meet Fri Oct 18 1:30 5:30, Sat Oct 19 9:00 5:00, Sun Oct 20 9:00 1:00. The workshop is at St. Andrews Heights Community Center 2504 13th Ave NW, Calgary.
Professional Training in Hakomi starts November 14, 2002
The format is one 4-day weekend/month providing 200 hours of training. The curriculum includes: how to embody the Hakomi Principles; the body as map of the psyche; developing the healing relationship; character theory and developmental issues; working with the Inner Child, core issues and emotional release; working with couples and family systems; ethics; group process and dynamics; working with trauma; the precise use of touch; specific techniques for eliciting information, awareness and healing through the body; transference and counter-transference.
In the later stages of training, special attention is paid to each therapists personal character and style to help them fine tune their own creative, individual approach. Emphasis is on increasing fluency, refining skills, developing artistry, and studying character strategy. Hakomi is an excellent base for any therapeutic modality and so we support students in finding their own style and creativity in the unique application of the work.

"When you can assist someone, spontaneously,
by your presence alone, to feel worthy and welcome,
then you have achieved the personhood of a therapist"
Ron Kurtz , founder of Hakomi Therapy
"I think Hakomi is a very gentle method of getting at tough, painful areas that sometimes are difficult to reach in traditional methods of therapy." Community Mental Health Nurse
"I have now attended two workshops and discovered that it also allows me to grow personally in a safe environment. I find it to be an exciting new way of deepening my understanding of myself and others and highly recommend it." Psychiatrist
"At this transition point in my life, Hakomi, is the perfect blend of personal and professional development."
Psychologist
"Hakomi is what I have dreamed of, tapping into the innate wisdom of our bodies to bring forth healing and harmony. The body is a storehouse of information and the Hakomi method is a key ring full of keys to open doors. Hakomi is about empowering the client which is so much longer lasting than bodywork alone."
