TIME: 50 minutes

TOTAL POINTS: 100

QUESTION (VALUE)

1. In 1987, Doug Melton and his associates described Vg-1. In 1993, they ascribed a possible function to Vg-1. Describe the evidence upon which that hypothesis is based (45 points). If we assume that the hypothesis is correct, describe the series of events that begin with the transcription of the Vg-1 gene and terminate with expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM). Include as many intermediate steps (morphogenetic, biochemical, and molecular) as you think are relevant to achieve this result (45 points).

3. Discuss the developmental role of the protein encoded by the dorsal gene of Drosophila. (10)
