The University of Calgary Catholic Community's chaplain is Fr. Liem Tran, a Dominican priest, appointed by Bishop Frederick Henry to serve the community and to be his representative on campus.
Fr. Liem Tran was born in 1958 to a devout Catholic family together with ten siblings seven of whom have survived to adulthood. He entered the Dominican Minor Seminary in 1972, took his simple vows in 1980, and completed his theology studies in 1985. He landed in the United Sates as an immigrant in 1989; one year later he came to Calgary, Canada to join the Vietnamese Dominican Vicariate and made his solemn profession in 1991.
He updated his theology at Newman Theological College in Edmonton for one year. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Paul O'Byrne of Calgary at St. Mary's Cathedral in 1993. He then served at Ascension parish for two years as an associate pastor. From 1995 to 1997 he was sent to the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. for his further study in theology and earned his Licentiate in Sacred Theology in 1997. His Licentiate's dissertation is entitled "The Use of Psalm 22 in Mark 15: 20b-41" and his Lectio Coram is "The Fullness of Christ in Ephesians 1: 22b-23". After being accepted to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Biblical Studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., he continued studying the Holy Scriptures for two years.
He has been the Chaplain for the Catholic Community at the University of Calgary since September of 1999.
A WELCOME'S MESSAGE FROM THE CHAPLAIN
Great Things Happen When God Mixes With Us!
Yes, a good thing happened when you came to the University of Calgary. Better and greater things will happen when in the midst of your busy schedule with books, lectures, readings, assignments, and papers, you can still find times to let God 'mix' with you. The University of Calgary Catholic Community has come into existence for the purpose of helping you to find God in the midst of your busy-ness.
I warmly and pleasantly welcome you to this community. Speaking from experience, I assure you that you will find a warm, friendly, and prayerful atmosphere to strengthen your faith journey; good and faithful friends to support you in all your ups and downs as a student and young adult. During your association with us, we hope that you will not only grow as a person with natural knowledge but also as a person of faith, trust and divine grace. Please do take the opportunity to volunteer your talents on the many committees that make this community thrive. Join us in prayer, social activities, and celebrations of the Holy Mass daily on campus from 12:20 pm to 12:50 pm or Sunday from 7 Pm at St. Pius X's Church on 24th Ave. N.W., right across campus. I am at your service during the week in MSC #373 from 9:30am to 4:30pm.
Great things happen when God mixes with us and greater things may happen when you come and mix with us in this faith community.
