What is the UCVM DVM program like?
The UCVM DVM program is a four-year, core-elective program. The first three years are in class and the fourth year is rotation with the Distributed Veterinary Learning Community. Students have four areas of emphasis to choose from: production animal health, ecosystem and public health, equine health, and investigative medicine. For more information on the program, you can go to the UCVM website
What advice do you have for students trying to get into veterinary school?
In addition to getting good marks in the prerequisite classes, gain as much experience as possible with both small and large animals. Volunteering in a veterinary clinic is a great way of gaining this experience and learning what the veterinary profession entails.
What do the students appreciate most about UCVM?
The supportive Faculty. They have worked incredibly hard to make this program a reality and are working even harder to make it a success.
What kind of hands-on experience is there at the DVM program?
Students take two weeks every semester to go into the community on field courses and learn about the interaction between animals and humankind as well as animal industries, on locations around Alberta. We also start learning hands-on techniques from the first day of classes in the Clinical Skills course.
