The Oldsmobile Mailing List Instructions

Individuals can subscribe and unsubscribe from the Oldsmobile list directly. The list is available in real-time and digest formats. The digest is produced daily or whenever postings reach a cumulative size of 60K bytes, and is a compilation of postings since the previous digest was produced. Some mail systems (notably AOL) place a limit on the number of individual messages that can be held in a client's in-box. Be advised that daily message traffic on the Olds list often exceeds 100 messages. If mail is unchecked for several days this can easily cause a full in-box which will result in bounced messages and removal from the Olds list. If this is the case and your system does not restrict the size of messages, just the total number of occurances, it is strongly encouraged to utilize the digest option.

All membership requests are to be sent to majordomo and not the list itself.   There are 2 ways of doing this:

#1 The Hard Way
Send subscribe or unsubscribe requests to: majordomo@chebucto.ns.ca
Include ONE of the following as the ONLY text in the body of the message:

Please note that if you are forwarding your mail from one account to another then you need to use the "unsubscribe oldsmobile [Email Address Subscribed From]" text.

#2 The Easy Way
To Remove Yourself From The Classic Olds Mailing List, in Standard Form: CLICK HERE then send the message.

Members are strongly encouraged to unsubscribe from the list if their mail will be unreachable by majordomo for any period of time, or if they are changing internet addresses. Chronic bounced mail (i.e. mailbox full, user unknown, unreachable mail address, or other such error messages) will result in removal of an address from the list by the administrator. Generally several days grace will be provided unless the volume of bounces becomes unmanageable. Please contact the list administrator ab348@chebucto.ns.ca if you require assistance.

If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list, (if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the list itself) send email to: oldsmobile-owner@chebucto.ns.ca. This is the general rule for most mailing lists when you need to contact a human.

To subscribe or remove yourself from the G-Body (newer cars) list please go to Jason Adcock's site.

Guidelines

Keep messages Oldsmobile related.  If the thread gets too far off of the Olds track then please resist the urge to add another post and instead let it die a quick natural death. Some folks object to receiving 150 messages in one day with only 50 Olds related ones. Go figure.

Keep private postings off the list.  "I have XXX for sale" is acceptable. "I'm interested" and anything after that should be done by private correspondence.

Check before you post that the address is appropriate.  It's common to see personnal email being sent to the list for hundreds to see.

The only flames allowed are those directed at non-Olds automobiles (tongue in cheek...)

Please trim repeated material from replies.  No need to clutter mailboxes with pages of other stuff, just to say "Me Too" Digest folks will appreciate the extra effort here.

Keep subject headings accurate.  Digest folks, add a new heading, something besides "digest #XXXXX".

If you change topic from a post, make sure the subject heading reflects that change or start a new topic.

Never post any attachments to the list.  TEXT ONLY. Any pictures, sounds, or other binary attachments will cause severe problems. Not many things will cause a user to get kicked out. This is one of them.  Very Serious.  The best way to show everyone a picture is to post the URL for its www location.

Turn off HTML coding.  Plain Text only. HTML is very messy for many users. No MIME, either. HTML tags for URL's and mailto's are OK, and encouraged in .sig files.

Do not post wild stories unless you can personally verify them.  Urban Legends pop up way too often. Same goes with E-mail Virus hoaxes. We don't want to see 'em.

Avoid the words "HELP" "SUBSCRIBE" "UNSUBSCRIBE" and "FREE" in the subject.  They'll cause the message to bounce.

No Cussing.  Some members like to allow their children to read the posts and at least a couple of members are clergymen. Sometimes you get the feeling that you are in a garage telling tales with the guys but please remember that not all readers are adults and some readers do find harsh language unacceptable.

No posts about active eBay (or any other) Internet auctions  The exceptions are; a) you are the seller, b) you know the item is misrepresented, or, 3) you know the item is so grossly overpriced that nobody would bid on it.  If in doubt please either wait until the auction has ended or email Greg requesting an exception.  The reasons for this rule have extensively discussed on the list and officially it's "No eBay auction postings."

No asking SOM, Mission, or Karl why they write in the third person.  If you can't figure it out then eMail them and ask.
