Established 1975. Until 1987, the awards were called the Canada Council Children's Literature Prizes. Awards are presented to the best books by Canadian citizens, whether published in Canada or elsewhere. Recipients are selected by two separate juries, one for English-language books, and one for French-language books. Initially, awards were presented for best writing. Awards for illustration were added in 1977/78.
