Robin McKinley

Robin McKinley has had a life full of various careers. She was born in Ohio and attended Dickinson College for eighteen months before moving on. Her careers have encompassed barn manager at a horse farm, editor and transcriber, and counselor at a private school.

Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast was selected as one of the New York Public Library's Books for theTeen Ager in the years 1980, '81 and '82. In 1982 she was awarded the American Library Association's Best Young Adult Book for Blue Sword and in 1983 the Newbery Honor Book for the same title. In 1985, its sequel, The Hero and the Crown won the Newbery Medal.

Robin McKinley returned to further education in 1975 at Bowdoin College where she has also received an Honorary Doctor of Letters (1986). She makes her home in Hampshire, England with her husband, writer Peter Dickinson (another presenter at this conference), three whippets and a horse. "I think I've discovered reality after all. I'm astonished at how interesting it is. It's giving me more things to write stories about."
