Mystery Culture Box Exchange
Students have discussed and selected cultural artifacts, items and objects that represent their country's culture and identity in some way. Considering the size of Canada and Australia, one can imagine how a task like this can become quite complicated! Having collected these items, the students have put together a cultural box to send to their counterparts on the other continent.

E-mail Introductions
Students from both countries have exchanged e-mail messages to introduce and describe themselves.

Cultural Artifacts
Ararat students chose items that reflected a light-hearted look at Australian culture. The items included: a beer can, an emu egg, emu feathers, a meat pie bag, a tomatoe sauce sachet, a football, eucalyptus oil, gum leaves and gum nuts, vegemite, wool, pictures of kangaroos and koalas, a Herald Sun newspaper and the words to Waltzing Matilda.
University of Calgary students also selected items representing popular culture. The cultural items they sent to Australia included maple syrup, cinnamin flavoured hot tamales (candy), ketchup flavoured potato chips, O'Henry chocolate bars, calendars of the area, a number of CD's of music and film, an ice hockey 'puck', an "I am Canadian" cotton cap, a home-made multicultural cook book, and a brochure on the Rocky Mountains.

Live Link-up
Students from Australia and Canada connected in real time via video-teleconference to open the Mystery Culture Boxes on October 23! After waiting for weeks to find out what was in the box from Australia, University of Calgary students got to tear off the brown paper and look inside!! During the video-teleconference, students had the opportunity to introduce each other, describe the cultural significance of items and objects found in their respective culture boxes, and ask many questions. Calgary students had an aromatherapy experience with eucalyptus oil - no clogged sinuses here!! The link-up also provided an opportunity for light-hearted joking and laughter and singing! Students from Ararat sang "Waltzing Mathilda", and the Calgary students returned the favor by singing Canada's National Anthem.
