The mausoleum of Dr. Thomas H. Quirk is interesting from an architectural point of view as it is the only mausoleum in Union Cemetery. Dr. Quirk was a respected dentist who came to Calgary in 1907 and practiced the new method of dentistry known as "Painless Dentistry".
Dr. Quirk, a lover of automobiles and driving, struck a horse with his car and was killed instantly. The horse was pulling a City street cleaning cart.
A particularly grizzly incident happened a few years back when someone broke into Dr. Quirk's mausoleum and stole his skull. The skull was recovered a few month's later when police found it decorating the mantle of a criminal who was being investigated on an unrelated charge.
