Uncle Eli I am the lowest
in all your creation,
a zero, a nothing,
an utter negation.
More worthless than dust
and more lowly than gnats,
I'm fit to be trod
like an old, muddy mat.
I creep on the earth
as a flea or a worm might,
with all of the grace
of a slug or a termite.

As I stammer and falter
and blurt out the wrong words,
accept it like music
from sweet-singing songbirds.
I can't find the right words,
I shudder and quake.
But please hear my prayers
for the whole people's sake.
