The title translates as "the new house." Both the work and its author are usually designated by the acronym "Ba"H."
Rabbi Joel ben Samuel Yaffe Sirkes.
1561-1640.
Poland
A methodic analysis of the Tur and its principal commentaries (the Beit Yosef and Darkhei Moshe), tracing sources and deciding between conflicting positions. Sirkes paid particular attention to the determining of correct textual readings in the Tur.
It was intended to serve as a prelude to a systematic commentary to the Shulhan 'Arukh that was never written.
The Bayit Hadash reflects Sirkes' conviction that the existence of codes of Jewish religious law should not be allowed to supercede study of the original sources.
