Dr. J. R. Parker - The I'powahsin Project

Current book project: Developing Racing and Driving Games
for Paraglyph Press.

I'powahsin is the name of a research project for the creation of a portable (GameBoy) Game that will assist in the teaching of the Blackfoot aboriginal language. This project is being untertaken by a small group of researchers at the Digital Media Laboratory at the University of Calgary and at Red Crow College. The goal is to build a prototype GameBoy game that illustrates the potential of the device and the game genre for teaching, and thereby preserving, indiginous languages. The heart of this project was begun in 2004, but we have only recently started deigning the game and coding the engine. We will build the basic game engine and construct the narrative, graphics, and sound. The basis of the game will be a Blackfoot story, and the game will be unique in that it will be playable in the Blackfoot language.

What does I'powahsin mean?

It is a Blackfoot word meaning 'speaking'. The game will be a quest in which instructions are given to the player verbally, Another purpose is to allow native game players to see their culture presented in the interactive medium, and to expose them to aspects of their culture that they perhaps have not encountered. Very few games contain aboriginal characters.

If the project succeeds as we hope, then this 'game' will assist in the preservation of aboriginal cultures in North America.
