Key Words: cryoprotectant diffusion, tissue cryopreservation, proton NMR, articular cartilage

1H-NMR was used to monitor the concentration of dimethyl sulfoxide in articular cartilage on patellae from pigs as a function of time and temperature. The resulting diffusion coefficient was 1.12x10-5 cm2/s at 23°C with an Arrhenius activation energy of 0.95 kcal/mol. Concentration profiles in cartilage of various thicknesses were calculated as a practical aid for the design of protocols to cryopreserve articular cartilage.
