Geographic Files for the 1986 Census

Five types of geographic files are available for the 1986 Census:
- Cartographic Boundary File (CARTLIB) [ DRAT ]
CARTLIBs are digital cartographic libraries of the boundaries of various geostatistical areas, e.g. federal electoral districts,
census divisions, census consolidated subdivisions, census subdivisions, census tracts for all of Canada. With the
appropriate software they can be used to map data.
- Enumeration Area Conversion File 1981-1986 [ DRAT ]
This file contains the relationship of the 1981 enumeration area structure to that of the Census of 1986.
- Geography Tape File [ DRAT ]
This file assigns to each Enumeration Area all higher geographic levels by codes and names. It includes all
standard geographic codes and also locates each EA centroid according to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)
co-ordinates and Lambert co-ordinates as well as by latitude and longitude. Final 1986 population counts and occupied
private dwelling counts for all EAs are also presented.
- Postal Code Geographic Conversion File [ DRAT ]
With this file, postal codes in Canada are linked to the census geographic hierarchy, including Universal
Transverse Mercator (UTM) co-ordinates and latitude/longitude co-ordinates.
- Street Index Files [ DRAT ]
These files are available for Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) and Census Agglomerations (CAs) that have a
corresponding Street Network File. These files are an alphabetical listing of street and address ranges, linked
to specific standard geographic areas.
