Identify Relevant Data Files
The University of Calgary collection contains mainly Canadian research data of two distinct types: Social Sciences and Socioeconomic Data, and Spatial/Cartographic Data. To review data files in the collection you scan the Classified List which groups files by type of data. Another option is to examine the Alphabetical List of titles of data files in the University collection. Frequently, useful data files are best identified by discussing your research project with your professor or thesis supervisor. The Academic Data Centre staff are also available for consultation.
Extract Data Files and Documentation
There are usually three essentials to any data analysis project: the data file codebook, the raw data file, and the command files which allow the raw data to be analysed with statistical software packages available at The University of Calgary or which you may have on your own computer.Data files, their codebooks and command files are available in a number of formats and on two main systems. DRAT accesses the majority of the large on-site data files used for statistical research at The University of Calgary. DRAT processes requests for specific data files and their supporting documentation. These requests are NOT processed interactively. Data files are identified for extraction, and this takes place when an operator is available to mount the tape.
The LANDRU system allows more efficient interactive searching and extraction of data and review of file documentation. At the moment it contains 100 Statistics Canada Microdata Files.
In addition to DRAT and LANDRU, there are a few important data files and products which are searchable only on CD-ROM in the Main Library. These products are available for use on the MADGIC Workstations located next to the Academic Data Centre / MADGIC Reference Desk on the 2nd floor of the MacKimmie Library Tower.
