EVDA 617 ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING DESIGN Q(3-0) 2002-2003

INTRODUCTION

The visual experience is a primary aspect of architecture. Architectural lighting design will be addressed as part of the broader visual design process in architecture. Both natural and electric lighting will be covered.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Ability to develop illumination schemes that enhance an architectural design.
  2. Ability to develop quantitative characterization of designs, including computer simulation and manual methods.
  3. Knowledge of natural and electric illumination systems and techniques.
  4. Basic knowledge of electrical systems for buildings.
  5. Understanding of vision as a psychological phenomenon.
  6. Understanding of light as a physical phenomenon.
  7. Awareness of physical modelling procedures for artificial and natural lighting design.


CONTENT

The functions and characteristics of lighting systems will be reviewed, together with their place in the development of design concepts. Components and terminology will be discussed, as well as quantitative design methods. Factors in systems selection will be examined, including:

  1. visual aspects of design,
  2. interrelationship of systems, and
  3. performance criteria for the evaluation of systems (quality of performance, cost, energy efficiency).


APPROACH

The course will be presented in lecture and workshop mode. The workshops will cover computer-based design aids and their application in lighting design.  The term project will be a lighting design exercise.

EVALUATION

Evaluation will be based on student performance in assignments and tests as follows:
Assignment 60%
Final Exam 40%

The final test will be an in-class open book examination. Students must achieve a B- grade in the final test as well as in the overall course work in order to pass the course.
