The appearance should match the purpose of the building in a coherent and logical way.

Concentrate first on the impact view, then select and emphasize objects of regard bearing the purpose of the interior in mind.

For instance, the entrance to a concert hall should have a presence that makes it apparent to those coming tot he building.
The means by which appearance is realized are:
- the architectural design
- decoration (finishes)
- furnishings
- people
- lighting
The technical means by which lighting and decoration (finishes) can influence appearance are:
- decoration colour (colour of finishes)
- control of brightness - more important elements should be brighter than less important elements in a given space
- use of modelling to reveal appropriately the form of objects and the appearance of people
