Economics 681: Special Topics in Health Economics


This course is usually offered in every Winter semester.

This course is a general introduction to current research in the economics of health and medical care, geared to students with significant research interests related with these fields. Content of the course will be tailored to these interests. Main topics of this course include: the Demand for Health and the Production of Health; Patient Behavior and Insurance; Physician-induced Demand and Traget Income; Physician Agency; Not-for-profit and For-profit Hospital; Hospital Competition; Payment Systems and Provider Behaviour; Optimal Health Insurance; the Role of Government; the Public and Private Financing and Provisions of Health Care; Government Purchasing of Health Services and Contracting; the Economics of Managed Care; Health behaviour/Economics of Health; Advanced Topics in Economics Evaluation of Health Care; etc.
