Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

UAVs are making a dramatic change in the field of remote sensing, enabling high-resolution, frequently repeatable, low-cost aerial imagery to be acquired. The purpose of this program is the development and application of UAVs for use in geomorphology, hydrology, archaeology, and glaciology.

The program currently uses two Mikrokopter Hexakopter XL UAVs with small compact consumer level camera products for testing and development flights. Target detection ability, resolution limits and distortion characteristics are the primary attributes being investigated in the initial stages of the program. Future applications will include landscape change detection and other temporal analyses as well as integrating the system with infrared camera technology.
