Sense Of Place

As a means of helping to mark the occasion of the Centennial of the Province of Alberta, A celebration of Sense of Place was conceived. It consists of an exhibition, a continuously running series of videos, an evolving collection of photographs, several excursions into the cultural landscape of Alberta, Speakers and panels, and a series of publications.

Poetry and Perception / Poésie et Perception: James Wilson Morrice and/etTom Thomson

Organized and circulated by the National Gallery of Canada
Organisée et mise en tournée par le Musée des beaux-arts du Canada

Comprising forty oil sketches by the two artists, (twenty each), this exhibition shows the changing character of the artists' use of paint and reveals their differing visions of nature and of the world. Given that each artist, in his own distinct way, concentrates on the evocation of specific places, this exhibition is also a perfect counterpoint to The Nickle's feature fall exhibition, Sense of Place.

There and Gone

There and Gone is a project involving three Alberta artists, Walter May, Laura Vickerson and Peter von Tiesenhausen which was presented at Galeria Klimy in Warsaw, Poland in June 2005.There are several aspects of practice, such as engaging narratives and the eloquent use of materials, which link these artists works.

Making Carpets in Asia: Oasis Town and Country

The exhibition isinspired by the sork of Jon Thompson and elaborates his four basic spheres of carpet producstion. Exhibits are drawn mainly from the Jean and Marie Erikson collection (which is housed at The Nickle Arts Museum) with additional examples generously lent by local private collectors.
