History

In July 2000 I moved from the University of Oxford (UK) where I carried out postdoctoral research with Professor Peter Robbins and his research group at the University Laboratory of Physiology. I am currently an Associate Professor within the Faculties of Medicine (Physiology & Biophysics and Clinical Neurosciences) and Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. I am funded as an  Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) Scholar and as a Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator. Our research group is currently studying the mechanisms of cerebral blood flow regulation in young healthy humans, and of the changes in the cerebral circulation associated with ageing. More specifically, our research focuses on the mechanisms that regulate the sensitivity of cerebral blood flow to hypoxia, hypercapnia, and hypocapnia. In addition, we use simple mathematical models to characterize the changes in cerebral blood flow in response to the above stimuli. This work will help us better understand the cerebral blood flow control mechanisms in young healthy humans, how these mechanisms become altered with ageing, and the role of interventions such as exercise as preventive strategies against diseases such as stroke.
