Herek GM, Kimmel DC, Amaro H, Melton GB. (1991). Avoiding heterosexist bias in psychological research. American Psychologist, 46(9), 957-63.

Abstract by author: Department of Psychology, University of California, Davis 95616-8686. The authors describe various ways that heterosexist bias can occur in scientific research and suggest ways that social and behavioral scientists can avoid it. Heterosexist bias is defined as conceptualizing human experience in strictly heterosexual terms and consequently ignoring, invalidating, or derogating homosexual behaviors and sexual orientation, and lesbian, gay male, and bisexual relationships and lifestyles. The deleterious scientific, social, and ethical consequences of such biases are discussed. Questions are provided for researchers to use in evaluating how heterosexist bias might affect their own selection of research questions, sampling, operationalization of variables, data collection, protection of participants, and dissemination of results. Suggestions also are offered for reducing heterosexist bias in academic journals, in textbooks, and in colleges and universities. Garnets L, Hancock KA, Cochran SD, Goodchilds J, Peplau LA. (1991).  Issues in psychotherapy with lesbians and gay men. A survey of psychologists. American Psychologist, 46(9), 964-72.

Abstract by authors: In 1984, a task force of the American Psychological Association (APA) Committee on Lesbian and Gay Concerns was charged with investigating bias in psychotherapy with lesbians and gay men. The task force surveyed a large and diverse sample of psychologists to elicit information about specific instances of respondent-defined biased and sensitive psychotherapy practice. Open-ended responses were used to separately identify major themes of biased and sensitive practice and to illustrate each with concrete examples. Results suggest that psychologists vary widely in their adherence to a standard of unbiased practice with gay men and lesbians. To bring individual practice into accord with APA policy will require continued and expanded efforts to educate practitioners about sexual orientation.  (Abstract reprinted by permission of The American Psychological Association.)

Excerpt: "I remember one of my friends overheard several of the male deans at a social work Dean's meeting communicating with each other saying, 'The lesbians are taking over the field.' I am sure there is still plenty going on underground, as you can imagine. For instance five or six years ago there was a concerted, but rather quiet effort led by some of the deans to keep homosexuality out of the Council on Social Work Education guidelines." (p. 66)

Pilkington NW, Cantor JM (1996). Perceptions of heterosexual bias in professional psychology programs: A survey of graduate students. Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, 27(6), 604-12.

Abstract by authors: Professional psychology student members (N = 64) of the American Psychological Association’s Division 44 ( Society For the Psychological Study of Lesbian and Gay Issues) were surveyed regarding experiences of perceived heterosexual bias and discrimination in their graduate programs. Instances of bias, discrimination, or both were reported in the following areas: (a) textbooks and other course materials, (b) instructor comments, (c) research supervision, (d) clinical practica and internships, (e) interactions with program administrators and other faculty, (f) teaching assistantships, and (g) course content. Specific examples are detailed, and educational reforms are suggested. (Abstract reprinted by permission of The American Psychological Association.)

Rothblum ED (1994). "I only read about myself on bathroom walls": the need for research on the mental health of lesbians and gay men. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 62(2), 213-220.

Abstract by authors: The very recent history of pathologizing homosexuality still has a strong impact on the public in general and mental health professionals in particular. In contrast to the early research on sexual reorientation of lesbians and gay men, there is relatively little empirical research on the mental health issues of lesbians and gay men. Whether researchers choose to define sexual orientation by sexual behavior, self-definition, or membership in lesbian and gay community groups will have an impact on the results. Research on mental health issues that include lesbians, gay men, and heterosexual women and men would allow an examination of the relative salience of gender versus sexual orientation. Finally, the experiences of lesbians and gay men in society may place them at increased risk for some mental health problems and may protect them from other mental health problems. Rubinstein G (1995). The decision to remove homosexuality from the DSM: Twenty years later. American Journal of Psychotherapy, 49(3), 416-27.

Abstract by authors: The present study investigated the influence of the patient’s sexual orientation on 417 therapists’ perception of his mental health. Participants were assigned case histories where a hypothetical patient was heterosexual or ego-syntonic homosexual. Attributions of severity of mental status were found to differ as a function of the patient’s sexual orientation. (Abstract reprinted by permission of The American Journal of Psychotherapy.)

Simoni JM (1996). Confronting heterosexism in the teaching of psychology. Teaching of Psychology, 23 (4), 220-6.

Abstract by author: Psychology is not immune from the biases of its cultural context, including the devaluation of homosexuality. Historically, the profession has pathologized nonheterosexual orientations and Jailed to cultivate an appreciation of and sensitivity toward diversity in sexual orientation. Part of the instructor’s role is to challenge prevailing heterosexist assumptions and provide accurate information about the Psychology of lesbians and gay men. This article presents a rationale for making the psychology curriculum more inclusive of lesbian and gay male issues. Results are presented from a survey of current psychology textbook; that indicate inadequate coverage and segregated treatment of the topic of homosexuality. Finally, suggestions are provided to instructors for expanding coverage of lesbian and gay male psychological issues and avoiding heterosexist bias. Stevens PE, Hall JM. (1991).  A critical historical analysis of the medical construction of lesbianism. International Journal of Health Services, 21(2), 291-307.

Abstract by authors: Lesbians are frequently treated with insensitivity, antagonism, and discrimination in health care encounters. The authors argue that contemporary health care experiences of lesbian clients cannot be understood apart from a critical examination of the historical construction of medical ideologies that pathologized lesbianism. An excavation of historical data about medical conceptualizations of lesbian women is undertaken to demonstrate how cultural and medical ideologies throughout the century have reinforced each other to shape lesbians’ health care experiences and influence public policies. By illuminating both the prejudical content of medical theories as well as the emancipatory actions of lesbian and gay communities to change stigmatizing diagnostic and treatment situations, the authors attempt to demystify ideologies about lesbians that motivate clinicians, administrators, educators, researchers, and theorists in the delivery of health services. (Abstract reprinted by permission of The International Journal of Health Services.)

Sager, Jennifer B; Schlimmer, Elizabeth; Hellmann, James A (2001). Latin American Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Clients: Implications for Counseling. Journal of Humanistic Counseling, Education and Development, 40(1): 21-33.

Abstract - Supplied by James A (Tony) Hellmann. See Note Below.

In the next five years Latino/a Americans will comprise the largest ethic minority in the U.S. Furthermore, the clinical demand for services of this population is increasing rapidly. Concomitantly, the lesbian, gay, and bisexual population is becoming more visible and also has an increased demand for services. These issues have given rise to a combination of both these needs within a single population: lesbian, gay, and bisexual Latino/a individuals. To assist counselors in ethically meeting the clinical needs of this population, this article provides an overview of the identity development, a review of characteristics and special issues, and proposed counseling competencies when working with Latino/a people and lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals, respectively. A synthesis of LGB Latino/a identity development and counseling implications is provided to assist counselors in treating this complex population. This article is not designed to train mental health workers, but rather to inform mental health professionals about a topic that has been largely ignored by the literature. Further readings, training, and supervision will be needed to adhere to ethical clinical standards.

Note sent by James A (Tony) Hellmann, September 2002: "Here is the abstract from our "unabridged" version of the article (we had to cut it from 33 pages to 22 when it was accepted for publication). I would appreciate it if you could add "Additional information added through correnspondence with James A. Hellmann" or some other kind of citation that shows the reader that this isn't part of the ERIC abstract. Also, feel free to add a link to my email address if you want. Then anyone with questions can contact me." Email for Tony Hellman: archer904@attbi.com
