Welcome to the Brain Training Study for Schizophrenia!

Who wouldn’t want to improve their memory, thinking speed, or decision making abilities? There are multiple brain training programs on the market, and we want to know how they benefit the brain.  As a participant in the Brain Training Study, you will be randomly assigned to either one of two groups. If you are in the brain training group, you will simply play online brain training games for 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week, for 10 weeks. Before the training period, you will undergo an initial pre-training assessment and interview at the University of Calgary Foothills campus. After the 10-week training period, you will return to the University of Calgary Foothills campus again for a post-training visit. This way, we can see what's changed!

If you are in the wait-list group, you will come in for an interview and assessment as well, before and after the 10-week period, but you will not be doing any brain training during those 10 weeks. After the 10-week waiting period, you will be invited to start the training program. If you do, we may ask you to train for a 10-week period and to come in for another assessment at the end of those 10 weeks.

Purpose of the Study:

This study is being conducted to learn more about brain training programs and its impact on memory and thinking abilities in people with schizophrenia. If you choose to participate in this study, you will be asked to come in for an interview and to fill out some questionnaires about your background and medical history.  On a second visit, you will complete computerized and paper-and-pencil tasks of memory and cognition (e.g., thinking abilities, memory, thinking speed, and decision making). During the training, you will spend approximately 30 minutes/day, 5 days a week for 10 consecutive weeks playing computerized games in the comfort of your own home. There will be no cost to participate - the brain training games will be provided for you.  At the end of the 10-week training period, you will be asked to come in for a final assessment. Both the pre-training and post-training sessions will take place at U of C’s campus at Foothills Medical Centre.

What's in it for me?

Train your brain for free - people can spend hundreds of dollars a year on brain training programs, but we'll provide these programs to you for free! You will be assigned with a username and password to access the training games. Other studies have shown that these programs improve cognitive skills (for example, your memory, thinking speed, and ability to reason and make decisions), so we expect yours to improve, too.  As a participant in this study, you will be contributing to neuroscience and knowledge about how brain training programs work. You will have complimentary access to BrainGymmer, an online brain training program, and may personally benefit from the training. You will receive $20.00 per visit (to cover parking costs and incidentals such as snacks or lunch) for your participation in this study.

If I qualify, what will I be asked to do?

After the assessment, you will be randomized into one of two groups. After this, your training can begin! Simply play the games for 30 minutes/day, 5 days/week for 10 weeks. After the 10 weeks of training, you will meet with the researcher again to have your cognitive skills measured. If you are interested in participating, please complete the survey below and we will contact you about your eligibility to join the Brain Training Study. Thank you!
