We have posted here our transcription of the entire manuscript containing Pearl, Cleanness, Patience, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. This transcription is a data-rich XML file that may not be of utility in its current form for many; planned interface development will make it more accessible. It is provided here for the interest of scholars researching the possibilities of XML for manuscript transcription. The full text is now posted at the link below in a browser-friendly format with a CSS stylesheet. It is best viewed with Netscape 6.0 or higher, Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. To view the XML itself, download the file by right-clicking on the link and open using a text-editor like WordPad.

The stylesheet draws a black border around each leaf of the manuscript, and a thinner line between the recto and verso sides. It (well, actually the particular DTD, but the effect is the same) expands abbreviations without notice, and prints all ornamental capitals at the same size regardless of their actual height in the manuscript. Catchlines are separated from the rest of the text on a page but not printed differently from regular text.

Many of these deficiencies can be solved by using a XSLT transform on the file before applying the CSS stylesheet, so look for further experimentation with display in this spot.
