Evaluating Learning Outcomes in GLGY201 (2008-2012)
Project Description
This project seeks to measure the learning outcomes of an introductory geoscience course in terms of student knowledge gain and student engagement. Laboratory exercises were modified to enhance active and collaborative learning strategies and the effectiveness of these exercises. Lecture activities were also modified to improve assessment and feedback practices and student engagement.
Project Outcomes
Collected and analyzed data to better understand of the students perceptions of the learning activities in the course, and identification of areas where instruction and course design can be improved to enhance the learning outcomes. Also collected data on student learning gains over four years of the project to determine the effectiveness of the course modifications on student learning. Findings are currently being written up for internal reporting and for peer-review publication.
Funding
This project was funded by the Teaching and Learning Funding Committee, the Faculty of Science and the Tamaratt Teaching Professor Endowment.
