Message from the Convenors

With the CLA conference fast approaching Justine has been actively organizing our sponsored sessions. The Interest Group is co-sponsoring with CACUL a presentation by Chris Adams of the University of Saskatchewan on the preliminary data he has collected from the Third Canadian Off Campus Library Services Survey. A panel will then respond to his findings. Doug Kariel of the University of Athabasca will be leading a workshop on whether the University business model impacts off campus library services. And Norm Friesen will lead a pre-conference session on WebCT for librarians. For more details please see Upcoming Events.

We are now receiving responses to our member survey. For those of you who have not yet replied to the survey, we encourage you to do so. Next year's programs and activities will be based on the survey results.

And if you are attending the CLA conference, the survey will be discussed at the Services for Distance Learning interest group business meeting - along with other business. Those of you who have already perused the CLA program will notice that the business meeting has been scheduled for Friday June 23rd at 7:30am! Despite the early hour, please consider attending. Your input is invaluable. And coffee will be provided! Another item on the business meeting agenda, that should be mentioned, is the election of the convenor(s). For more information about convening an interest group please see: http://www.cla.ca/about/intgroup.htm, or the announcement in this issue of Distlib Digest, or contact either of the current convenors. If you have any items you would like added to the agenda, again please contact us.

Finally, we should mention an important change in financial procedures. As of January 1st, 2000 interest groups are allowed to carry-over twice the annual allocation to the Interest Group or $500 - whichever is greater. It should be noted that interest groups may carry forward additional monies for two years provided the purpose for the funds is clearly stated. However, the amount available annually for the Special Interest Group Project Fund has been significantly increased. This means that there are financial resources available for the interest group to undertake special projects. And so again, it is important that we hear from our membership as to what they would like us to pursue.

Finally, welcome back to Susan Massarella who has recently returned from her stint as a shipboard librarian with the World Cruise Company. She can be contacted at: smassare@vianet.on.ca. Justine Wheeler's email address remains: Justine Wheeler

Yours sincerely,

Justine Wheeler and Susan Massarella
