Graduate Student Opportunities

My research program offers opportunities for developing research projects on various aspects of drainage basin evolution, hillslope geomorphology, fluvial geomorphology, impacts of wildfire on landscape change, and geomorphology/ecology interactions (see Research section of this web page for details). My research to date has focused on landscape change in mountainous environments. Given its close proximity to the mountains, Calgary is an ideal location to undertake such projects.

The Department of Geography at the University of Calgary is an exciting location to undertake graduate research.  Our department is growing rapidly and offers expertise in many aspects of physical geography, such as landscape modelling, fluvial geomorphology, glacial geomorphology, glaciology, hydrology, biogeography, remote sensing and GIS. Calgary is a wonderful city to live in, being situated right beside the Rockies and only a short distance to the badlands and the impressive Royal Tyrell Museum.

I will consider supervising students interested in our thesis-based PhD/MSc programs or our MGIS program (course-based program with a major project). If you are interested in finding out more about becoming involved in my research program, then contact me by e-mail and I would be pleased to provide you with more information. The Department of Geography provides opportunities for funding to highly-ranked thesis-based graduate applicants. Contact Paulina Medori, the Graduate Program administrator, for more details on our application process and funding opportunities (medori@ucalgary.ca).

Students interested in applying to work with me in our thesis-based program are encouraged to apply to NSERC for graduate student scholarships or other major awards for which they are eligible. The application deadline varies depending on your particular Department and University (and is also different if you are not presently attending university), but typically is in October or November. Please check the NSERC web site (www.nserc.ca) for more information.
