Known worldwide by only his first name, Avi Wortis was born in New York in 1937. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Columbia University, he worked as a librarian for the New York Public Library and then at Trenton State College, New Jersey. Although he had been writing throughout those years, it was not until 1986 that writing became his full time occupation.

It is Avi's belief that "the way" a story is told is part of the story itself. The result has been books that are very different from each other. Who is that Masked Man Anyway? is written entirely in dialogue and City of Light, City of Dark is a full length comic book. The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle is written in the tradition of a romantic sea story and Poppy is an animal tale. For each of the different stories it was important that the style and content work together. We can look forward to a new title in 1996, Beyond the Western Sea, a full length novel for young people in a two‚volume story set in nineteenth century Ireland.
