Ron Lightburn

Ron Lightburn's first picture book, Waiting for the Whales, written by Sheryl MacFarlane, garnered him three prestigious literary awards ‚ The Governor‚General's Literary Award for Children's Illustration, the Amelia Frances Howard‚Gibbon Illustrator's Award and the Elizabeth Mrazik Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award. This apparent meteoric appearance belies the fact that Ron has been working in illustration since graduating from the Alberta College of Art in 1975.

Although born in Cobourg, Ontario, Ron grew up in West Vancouver, BC, and now lives in Victoria, BC. Even as a child he used coloured pencils for drawing, and since 1982, they have been his favoured medium.

Ron has illustrated four other books for children since Waiting for the Whales, and has also illustrated numerous book covers. His work is noted for its sensitive use of light and shadow. We are pleased to say that he was the unanimous choice of the K6 committee to illustrate our commemorative poster which inspired the graphic work of our promotional materials.
