LESSON 5 - PART 5 - ARTICLE 30 - ENTRY INTO FORCE & ARTICLE 31 - TERMINATION

Generally, treaties will enter into force upon ratification of the treaty by exchange of instruments of ratification; this will be the same day for both States. Often the effective date of the treaty will differ from the date it entered into force and such dates should be acrefully reviewed.

Treaties will remain in force until terminated by a Contracting State.

The Canada-US Treaty provides that either Canada or the US may terminate the Treaty at any time after 5 years from the date on which instruments of ratification are exchanged, provided that notice of termination is given through diplomatic channels at least 6 months prior to the date on which the Convention is to be terminated
