Quatre ans plus tard, ce changement de paradigme a pris toute sa force puisque cette première conférence dans un pays d'Afrique a été marquée par un déplacement et une redéfinition des enjeux de la mobilisation autour du sida. Overall, the study found that gay applicants were 40 percent less likely to be granted an interview than their heterosexual counterparts. "The results indicate that gay men encounter significant barriers in the hiring process because, at the initial point of contact, employers more readily disqualify openly gay applicants than equally qualified heterosexual applicants," writes the study's author, András Tilcsik of Harvard University.

Launch of Healthy People 2020, USA (2010): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health: Goal - Improve the health, safety, and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. - Overview - LGBT individuals encompass all races and ethnicities, religions, and social classes. Sexual orientation and gender identity questions are not asked on most national or State surveys, making it difficult to estimate the number of LGBT individuals and their health needs. Research suggests that LGBT individuals face health disparities linked to societal stigma, discrimination, and denial of their civil and human rights. Discrimination against LGBT persons has been associated with high rates of psychiatric disorders,1 substance abuse,2, 3 and suicide.4 Experiences of violence and victimization are frequent for LGBT individuals, and have long-lasting effects on the individual and the community.5 Personal, family, and social acceptance of sexual orientation and gender identity affects the mental health and personal safety of LGBT individuals.6.

Semp D (2007). A Public Silence: Sexual Orientation and Mental Health Services (Word Download).  So, if discrimination related to sexual orientation is directly connected to mental health problems for some MSM, then how well do mental health services address this issue?... . Further some participants were unable to disclose their sexuality in mental health services even though they considered it central to their mental health problems. This was the case for the two youngest men interviewed. Daniel explained how a medical and symptom based approach was a barrier to discussing his issues regarding his sexuality... They reported that staff generally do not ask clients about sexual orientation and they gave various reasons for this. One barrier to asking about sexuality is the perceived dominance of the medical model...  This focus on ‘mental illness’ reduces the chance that staff may see conversations about sexual orientation as important or relevant to their work. Instead, the medical model requires them to focus primarily on symptoms and diagnosis... Yet, homosexuality is marginalised, often remaining unacknowledged. Thus, when homosexuality is omitted for MSM it is not just their sexual behaviour that is ignored; rather, many other aspects of their lives are also ignored such as their relationships, important aspects of identity, and their experience of homonegative trauma...

Gay life expectancy revisited: "The aim of our research was never to spread more homophobia, but to demonstrate to an international audience how the life expectancy of gay and bisexual men can be estimated from limited vital statistics data. In our paper, we demonstrated that in a major Canadian centre, life expectancy at age 20 years for gay and bisexual men is 8 to 21 years less than for all men. If the same pattern of mortality continued, we estimated that nearly half of gay and bisexual men currently aged 20 years would not reach their 65th birthday." - Does homosexual activity shorten life? Lesbian and bisexual women’s health research (Australia) is a rapidly growing area. Small community-based research projects involving these women have been underway since the 1980s. Increasingly, over the last decade, larger population-based research has been conducted. One of the current challenges is that questions on sexual orientation and gender identity are not yet included in routine demographics of most major national research and census data collection. Their inclusion would provide important local information about the health of same sex attracted women compared with their heterosexual peers. Known completed projects and publications are included here. There are many projects underway in Australia, which are not yet included: Download Page For Many Documents & Reports.

The Transgender Wars:
"The primary problem of transgendered people, and all those who don't fit the man/woman straitjacket, is not so much about accepting their identity, but about coping with how society violently enforces gender norms... Instead, her parents kicked her out of the house. She was thrown out of school, and had to live on the street. When she turned her first trick she was robbed and raped. Later, underground surgery, the equivalent of a botched backroom abortion, left her unable to breathe or talk properly.  Is it her problem, or ours?  Violence, A to Z..." - Queering Gender: Trans Liberation and Our Lesbigay Movements: presents some of the problems in GLB communities such as the existence of genderqueers, the tyranny of the gender binary, transphobia and related violence / abuses, biphobia, class factors, and related transcultural issues. - Transgender Asia (Sam Winter). - Transgender health Program. - Transgender Health Action Coalition. - An Overview of U.S. Trans Health Priorities: A Report by the Eliminating Disparities Working Group (PDF Download).

The tyranny of the gender binary - "There must only be two genders" and the harm done to all who are born inviolation violate socially learned beliefs - Sunday Times Magazine, October, 2001 - The worse of both worlds (2 parts): "How would you feel if you'd grown up thinking you were a girl and discovered at 20 that, genetically, you were a man? ..But in the West since the 1950s, standard medical procedure for treating children born with ambiguous genitalia has been to assign them a gender quickly to avoid ridicule and rejection... Surgeons, geneticists, endocrinologists and clinical psychologists form a team to decide, usually within a few days, what sex the child is to be designated. The rationale is that parents must be told as quickly as possible to prevent them from rejecting the child. This medical response is based on the assumption that normality is essential for parental and social acceptance and happiness."

By following the personal stories of service members, ASK NOT reveals the psychological tolls on gay Americans who served in combat under a veil of secrecy.

Status of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Persons in Sociology (2002):  "At the request of the American Sociological Association (ASA), the Committee on the Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) Persons in Sociology conducted an investigation... First, while graduate student responses to closed-ended questions reveal a moderate degree of satisfaction with their graduate training and with the social and academic culture of their program, open-ended responses suggest a significant degree of academic and social isolation... Fourth, there has been a significant increase in the visibility of LGBT scholarship in the various professional outlets of the discipline since the early 1990s... As is the case for other marginalized groups who seek both social recognition as well as opportunities to engage in scholarship regarding the nature of the group, the status of LGBT persons in sociology is complicated and in flux. On the one hand, LGBT scholarship in its various forms is getting increased attention. On the other hand, that attention is quite limited: relatively few papers appear to make it into journals (see text Table below), journal publishing tends to be limited to a few journals..." - Changing the Face of Medical Education to Improve Care to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Patients. - Readings on Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals in Higher Education.

We find that both research and teaching on LGBT topics have made some headway into the discipline, and that political scientists largely accept that LGBT issues can be fundamentally political and are worth studying and teaching for that reason. Nonetheless, troubling questions about discrimination both against those who conduct research concerning LBGT issues and LGBT individuals themselves remain.

The development of these GLBT information web pages were made possible through the collaboration of Richard Ramsay (Professor, Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary) and Pierre Tremblay (independent researcher, writer, and GLBT children and youth advocate) who both recognize that often needed social changes occur as the result of knowledge availability and dissemination. Additional Information at: Warning, Acknowledgments, Authors.

These GLBTQ Info-Pages were located at the University of Southampton from 2000 to 2003, this being the result of a collaboration with Dr. Chris Bagley, Department of Social Work Studies, University of Southampton.

Graphics are compliments of Websight West. The Synergy Centre donated computer/Internet time to facilitate the construction of this GLBT information site. Both are owned by a Chris Hooymans, a friend, and former publisher of a gay & lesbian magazine in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Chris continues to offer his expertise whenever needed and he has supplied, free of charge, the hosting of the site - Youth Suicide Problems: A Gay / Bisexual Male Focus - where a smaller - GLBTQ Education Section - and the Internet Resource Page for this subject ( is located.

Many thanks to Wendy Stephens from The Department of Communications Media, University of Calgary.  She communicated with publishers of many academic journals (an ongoing time-consuming process) for permission to reproduce abstracts from papers and studies on these GLBT information web pages.

The information made available on this web page does not represent all the relevant information available on the Internet, nor in professional journals and in other publications.

This web page was constructed to supply a spectrum of information for individuals seeking to understand one or more of the many gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer and transgender issues.
